Penn Logo Meaning
The current UPenn shield logo was designed from 1932 to 1933 by the school trustees. The main element is the dolphin naiant which was adopted from the Franklin Arm symbol and the 3 dots in chevron from the Penn family coat of arms. 2 books in gules represent knowledge and learning.
There are 3 colors used in the Penn logo, White, Red (Gules), and Blue (Azure). These colors were chosen by students in the saratoga meeting in New York in 1874. Then in 1910 color was standardized based on the United States government flag.
Although the motto is “Leges Sine Moribus Vanae” which means “Laws without morals are useless” it is sometimes not included in the logo.
